Whitlee Alyzabeth | My Big Girl

I haven’t posted much about our firstborn little love lately so I wanted to take some time to make a special post about our girl. Whitlee is 2 years and 8 months, and I am more in love with her than ever. She has truly handled our chaos with Huck so well and I couldn’t be more proud. Don’t get me wrong, she’s testing her limits with each and every person these days but I’m not 100% sure that’s not just her age in general. She has become such a social little girl and speaks to (almost) everyone she comes in contact with. I can’t help but think she’s making some of these people’s days.. there are so many that seem so sad where we’re at.

She does something almost every day that either amazes me or has me in tears from laughing or usually both. Her perception and ability to retain information seriously blows. my. mind. I mentioned the bat colony here in Houston a couple of weeks ago and said something about going on a date. Then this past Saturday I asked if she wanted to go on a date with mama and daddy (said nothing about bats) and she said, “Yea! To go see the bats??” I was so shocked that she even remembered that. Nolan didn’t even know what she was talking about until I reminded him about the bat colony I’d mentioned.

She absolutely loves her baby brother. She talks about him all the time and likes to pretend she’s his doctor when she visits him at the hospital. She listens to him with a stethoscope and then says, “okay, doing great!” It’s going to be such a change for her when he finally comes home because she doesn’t know that he doesn’t actually belong at the hospital forever. I think it’s going to be the sweetest / most trying / most rewarding thing ever to have both kiddos under one roof finally.

I honestly can’t believe how independent she’s become over the last 4 months or so. It was like Huck was born and she suddenly became a little girl and not a baby at all anymore. And she’ll tell you real quick “I not a baby! I a big girl!” She sleeps all by herself in a big girl bed both at home and in the travel trailer we’re living in temporarily. She’s fully potty trained except for bedtime and does so good at telling us when she needs to go.

I wish I could write down everything she does and says and convey the hilariousness of this child because whether it’s dancing in her extra big tshirt saying “I’m a princess!” or doing pretend voices or telling me her own bedtime stories, she is so full of life! Her latest special thing is hugging me and saying, “I really like you, mama.” Lord, help me remember that when she’s 13 and thinks she hates me because I permed her hair after she begged me to and ends up with “worm hair”… 😉

All of this being said, I hate that our family is so split up and I miss her with everything I have when I’m away from her. I think that’s been my biggest struggle so far; truly wanting to be in two places at one time. I try to make sure I take Saturday afternoons off from the hospital and spend quality time with her and Nolan, just the three of us – we go on Whitlee dates. Sometimes it’s just swimming at the RV park and sometimes it’s dinner out and watching thousands of bats fly out from under a bridge at sunset.

One day I hope she reads this and knows how much her daddy and I love her with all of our hearts. That her brother wasn’t ever a replacement or that he was more important than her, but we wanted her to have a best friend for life in him and unfortunately he just ended up needing a little extra help and attention in his first few months. I hope she knows how absolutely proud of her we are and that we think she’s the bravest and smartest little girl ever. And that one hug from her makes everything okay again for me. I hope she knows I cry for her sometimes when she’s away from me because I wish I could have both my babies with me 24/7. But I hope she knows she’s made all of this just a tiny bit easier for me with the fact that she’s been so flexible. I like not having to worry if she’s having fun or being taken care of. And that every time she tells me she loves me, I know she was sent here by God to take extra special care of her mama.

Whitlee Alyzabeth, you are loved in a way that no words will ever explain and I hope you never forget it. You will always be my baby girl.

Life Lately | Big Sister

Our sweet girl is a little over 2 now (almost 27 months if you’d like exacts) and we’ve been really caught up in life all about baby brother lately so I wanted to do a post just for her. I’m sure there will at least be mention of Huck though, because she’s pretty into him too.

I guess the biggest milestone is that she got a big girl bed last week! I’m still waiting to put a few more things on her wall above her bed but her new room is pretty much complete. We decided to skip the toddler bed and just go with a twin that was close to the floor. Prior to the switch, she would go down for the night pretty easily in her crib, and sleep through the night. She started calling for me when she’d wake up in the mornings a few months ago. I was a little worried about her getting up too much during the night or falling out of it. We talked a lot about how she’s a big girl now and asked her if it was okay if we give the baby bed to Huck. She was pretty excited about it all. The first night she was really excited to get in it… until she realized she had to stay in it. There were lots of tears and saying “scared” so I ended up staying with her a while, patting her back and telling her it was okay. But every time I’d try to leave, she got upset. So I eventually bribed her and said if she stayed all night in her big girl bed, she’d get a surprise in the morning (a few m&ms after breakfast). And it worked! She slept all night and called for me when she woke up. Each night got a little easier and then she figured out she could get up by herself in the morning, but thankfully (knock on wood) she hasn’t gotten up in the middle of the night yet. So far, so good. It hasn’t quite been a whole week yet though.

She’s pretty talkative these days and I’m not sure if I understand her so well because I’m her momma but I feel like she speaks more clearly than some 3 and 4 year olds I know. A few conversations lately:

A neighbors dog was in our yard while we were outside playing.

Momma! A puppy!!

Whitlee, I’m not sure about that puppy. He might not be nice. Let’s leave him alone and see if he’ll go home.

Mag mag knows this puppy. It okay momma.

(Mag mag is our dog, Maggie)

Whitlee, what did you and mawmaw do today?

Umm… go to Target! (They didn’t)

You did?! Did you get me a present??

Uh huh!!

What did you get me??

Umm… tape!

Tape?

Uh huh!! REAL tape!!

While getting paint for Huck’s room mixed at Walmart

Look, that guy is mixing the paint for Huck’s room. He’s gonna shake it up real good for us.

That for baby Huck’s room?

Yes, that paint is for his wall

She starts trying to pull my shirt up over my belly

Uh, excuse me. What are you doing, ma’am?

Pull you shirt up so baby Huck can see his paint.

Anytime I grunt or groan, usually when I’m getting up from the floor or couch

What mad bout, momma?

Our conversations are usually extremely funny and her perspective on things is so fun to watch. She’s also learned a few bad habits and has small tantrums pretty often. We usually make her go stand in the corner when she throws stuff during a fit or tries to hit or kick, and it calms her down really fast. Thankfully her fits are pretty short lived.

She can also count to 12 and say her whole ABC’s.

As far as Huck goes, she asks about him a lot but she doesn’t know he’s sick. She just asks “when Huck be here, momma?” Or she points at things in his room and says “that for baby Huck!” She also says his whole name if you ask what her brother’s name is.

So that’s just a little update on our first little love. We can’t believe she’ll be a big sister soon!!

Whitlee | Two Years

Where in the world has time gone? How do we have a T W O year old?? Our baby girl just blew through her second birthday and left her poor momma over here in the dust, wondering where my tiny baby went. But here we are.. a two year update. Our Whitlee is ALL girl. She loves skirts and bows, sometimes wearing multiple tutus at one time. She loves her tea sets and giving people “haircuts”.  She is the sweetest, snuggliest little girl and is so quick to brighten someone’s day. She tells everyone in the store “hi!” and gives hugs and kisses so freely to be people she loves, sometimes 100% unprompted, and I swear my heart just explodes. My favorite is when she grabs your face and plants one on you unexpectedly. She insists that we’re having a baby sister and most recently, boy or girl, we’re naming the baby “Tick Tock”. I’ll have to remember to put that in the baby’s book. 😊

Our girl is a major talker; she got that one honest. But we are forever amazed at the phrases she says and the stuff she picks up and unfortunately some of the stuff she repeats. She likes to say “me go?” and “let Maggie out!” and the other day “Maggie don’t get me no more” complete with a finger pointing, bossing the dog. She’s actually pretty bossy sometimes and has a little bit of attitude, sometimes telling me “okaaayyy, maaamaaa” , and I swear she’s 16 already. But then she says “I love you!” and all is well.

Stats: We go for her two year appointment next week but we were just at the doctor earlier this week and she was 22 lbs and 33 inches tall. Those measurements put her in the less than 5 percentile on weight but in the 25th for height. Still a little skinny, but looking like she’s taking after her daddy. He’s tall and thin too.

Eating: Food is still sometimes a struggle. It comes and goes a lot and she’ll eat everything in the house one day and then won’t hardly eat anything at all the next. When she does eat, she’s fully feeding herself, using utensils pretty darn well for the most part. She can even eat cereal with milk, mostly without spilling. She’s a big snacker, like her momma. I can always tell when she’s had a lot of snacks, because she won’t touch her next meal, so we try to keep the snacks down to a few a day. When I noticed her weight was slowing down, that preemie mom anxiety got me a little again and I started making her eat the yogurt squeezers on top of whatever meal we were eating at the time. It helped though; she gained a few lbs in the month or so after that.

Food Likes: Still loves macaroni and cheese and is very picky about the brand. She will only eat Velveeta Shells and Cheese. No other kinds will do. Also loves chips, chicken, grapes, olives (green and black), sausage, waffles, cheese, black eyed peas, and oranges. I think her absolute favorite right now is pizza.

Food Dislikes: She still won’t do mashed potatoes, really potatoes of any kind except french fries and doesn’t like eggs or baked beans. She also doesn’t care much for any drinks other than milk. Happy about that one, though! Occasionally she asks for water.

Sleep: She does really well sleeping in her crib all night, usually sleeping 12 hours. She takes one nap, about mid day that lasts about an hour and a half up to two hours, and randomly a super long one at closer to three hours. We just bought her a twin size bed and will hopefully be transitioning to that sometime after the new year. I’m a little nervous for that!

Milestones:

-She has a full set of teeth all the way up to the first set of molars, and the next set are about to break through the skin. Those canine teeth were R O U G H.

-Talking in full sentences now, usually 3-5 words.

-We’re smack dab in the middle of potty training. She can go all day 100% with no accidents, IF I let her go naked. Panties are still a struggle.

-sings several songs with shocking accuracy, including “Hello” by Adele, Do You Want to Build a Snowman, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, and Jingle Bells

Likes:

-Movies – favorites are Finding Nemo, Minions, Frozen, and How the Grinch stole Christmas

-Baby dolls and taking care of them – she got a baby stroller, high chair, and bed for her birthday and she’s been obsessed.

-Bathtime, hates to get out and tells me “can’t get out, I’m fish.”

-Being outside

-Swimming

-Playing in the dirt

-Riding in her stroller

Dislikes:

-Being inside

-Being told no

-Bugs

-Getting her nose wiped

We love you so much, little girl! We never knew what we were missing before you and as I’ve said a million times before, we are so thankful we get to be your parents.

Whitlee’s First Birthday Party

We decided to have Whitlee’s birthday party on December 5th so that more family could be there. Originally I had plans to do a pink and gold birthday, but since she has decided she’s pretty much obsessed with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, I changed my mind. We decided to go with a red, black, and gold theme instead and it turned out really cute if I do say so myself! And this ham LOVED all of the attention, of course.

IMG_5869

I started with her invitations. I got them through an Etsy shop – One Five Designs, who created them and printed them. Their customer service was so great and the quality of the invitations was perfect! (address and phone number is blacked out)whitlee-redgoldminnie(5x7)

We finally got her highchair repainted and I made the banner for above her cake table and the banner for her highchair.

IMG_5643IMG_5646

We went with red velvet cupcakes to compliment her smashcake. Thank you, Pinterest! I was so nervous they wouldn’t turn out very well making me a pinterest fail, but I was super proud of them. The night before when I was adding the “ears” and the bows, my homemade cream cheese icing was a little soft and my ears kept moving. Thankfully overnight in the refrigerator, they hardened up.

She wasn’t really all that into her cake, but I’m a little relieved since that  meant no major sugar crash later.

IMG_5736IMG_5789IMG_5791

We got her a bounce house since there were a lot of bigger kids there, and Miss Priss wanted to be right in the middle of them. She got knocked down and kicked and bounced around more times that I even care to think about, but never cried. She loved the kids!

IMG_5686IMG_5707

She got SO many presents. Seriously. I didn’t even know there were that many different Mickey Mouse / Minnie Mouse toys, but she got a ton of them and not one the same. And clearly by the sugars given to baby Minnie, she loves them.

IMG_5807 IMG_5809 IMG_5802 IMG_5835

It ended up being a little colder than I expected but thankfully we had a really great turn out and we’re so thankful for everyone that was able to make it out. But – this momma is relieved its over!

Worn out little girl relaxing on Aunt Taylor and her newest cousin (on the way). Baby Parker is due in March!

Happy Birthday!!

As I lay here while Miss Whitlee naps on me, I glanced at my watch and realize this time last year I was being prepped for my c section. I may have had my spinal by now…not entirely sure. But on November 25, 2014 at 3:40 in the afternoon, we heard the sweetest sound ever. Our girl was here.

Now we have a smart, funny, wild one year old and she continues to amaze us every day. Happy FIRST birthday, Whitlee Alyzabeth! Momma and Daddy love you more than anything in the world!

12 month update coming soon!

Whitlee | 10 Months

Whew.. I am so behind. We’re about a week and a half from 11 months, but during the fall we have birthdays galore and then Miss Whitlee got sick, so I’ve had little spare time. But! I’m here now. I’ll try to post 11 months on time.

IMG_4999

So…just when I think we have had the best month yet (ahem.. 7 months, and then again at 9 months) …then we get to 10 months. I feel like I remember reading blogs where a mom would be like “Ohh, this is my favorite age yet.” And then the next month, they’re like “I know I said this before, but this is my favorite age yet.” Well, now I get it. I thought seeing my little girl light up with her first smile took the cake. Then I heard her laugh, and say daddy, and say mama, and man, she is just getting to be more and more fun every single day. She is so smart and funny and silly. We just love her to death.

IMG_5006

Stats:

We ended up going to the doctor last week for an upper respiratory infection. She only weighed 17 lbs 14 oz, but  I’m sure she’s growing because she is steadily outgrowing all of her clothes, mostly length ways. They said not to worry because she’s so active now, she won’t gain weight nearly as fast anymore. I work with a guy that has a little girl that was born a week or so before Whitlee and was full term and they are exactly the same size. Whitlee is actually a tad bigger, so I’ll call her good.

IMG_5017

Eating:

It’s kind of crazy to me how she’s slowly transitioning into eating normal meals and eating less and less formula. We’re still do formula at 22 calories, but she is definitely beginning to eat less often. She has moved into where she eats like a morning bottle before her nap, and an afternoon bottle before her nap, and she gets a bottle before bed, all additional to actual breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with occasional snacks in between. She’s also still eating a bottle in the middle of the night. My next move is to wean that bottle for good finally. This is our normal eating schedule:

7:30 AM – Breakfast (usually baby yogurt and cheerios – she is seriously obsessed with all kinds of Gerber baby yogurt)

9:00 AM – Morning Bottle (5-6 oz)

12:30/1:00 PM – Lunch (usually a Stage 3 baby food or one of the squeezable pouches)

1:30 PM/2:00 PM – Afternoon Bottle (5-6 oz)

5:00 PM – Dinner (Stage 3 baby food or whatever we’re having. I use this time to let her try new things.)

7:30/8:00 – Night bottle (6-8 oz)

1:00/ 2:00 AM – little bottle (4 oz)

She’s still pretty particular about her likes and dislikes. She will shake her head “no” when she doesn’t want anymore. She also prefers to eat from the little pouches more so than  a spoon (unless its yogurt), so I trick her into eating all kinds of stuff using reusable pouches from Squooshi. Aside from being a little annoying to wash, they work great!

IMG_5016

Food Likes:

Gerber Baby Yogurt – every flavor so far

Cheerios

Macaroni and Cheese

Real Spaghetti (not baby food spaghetti)

Limes

Beans and Rice (Mexican restaurant)

Food Dislikes:

Most Fruit

Any kind of baby food “meat”

Most tomato based foods (raviolli, spaghetti os) – she loved homemade spaghetti though

French Fries

Sleep:

While she’s still not sleeping all night in her bed, she does sleep in it for naps and a couple of hours at night. We’re still co-sleeping, because that’s what works for us to get any sleep and I’m not gonna lie – I secretly like being that close to her. I miss her when she’s in her bed.

She still takes two naps – one morning nap about 9:00 and an afternoon nap about 2:00. Both are usually an hour and a half to two hours. Occasionally she’ll miss a nap and occasionally she’ll pick up an extra cat nap. But most commonly, two solid naps.

Milestones:

This is where 10 months smacked me in the face.

-She cut both top front teeth this month! One the end of August, and the other was about a week and a half behind it. Those were pretty rough nights.

-Goes from crawling to sitting up perfectly now

Said Mama!

-Started doing this odd scoot on her butt, while she leaves one leg under her. It’s like a half full crawl, and half scoot.

-Can “dance” on demand now

-And the big one – her first steps!! She took two steps on September 11 and now she will take one or two steps without falling. I couldn’t believe it! I have been so worried her real first steps would be while I was at work, but we started working with her one week and she ended up doing it on a Friday evening for the first time. It was so exciting.

She’s wearing mostly all 9 month clothes with the occasional 12 month outfits and we’re still in size 3 diapers.

IMG_5004

Likes:

-Any animals

-Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

-Other children, especially her cousin Tyner.

-Being outside

-Riding the RZR

-“Driving” Daddy’s truck

-Getting her ears cleaned with baby Q-tips…seriously she can be screaming and will just go silent when I clean her ears.

-Remotes/Cell Phones

Dislikes:

-Diaper Changes

-Clothing Changes

-Getting her face wiped after eating

We finally baby proofed everything with baby gates and bought the cabinet latches because she is into e v e r y thing. But its so much fun to watch her learn new things, which happens just about every day. I can’t believe our tiny little 4 lb 3 oz preemie is a walking, talking pre-toddler with 4 teeth and a head full of reddish blonde hair. She is so much more than we could have ever asked for. I seriously don’t know how I went so long without her in my life. We love you more than the world, little girl!

Whitlee | 9 Months

Well, hello again guys. Jaime here, momma to a 9 MONTH OLD. What even. I mean she might as well be a teenager. I remember posting her 7 month update, saying that it seemed like Whitlee hit 6 months and just took off on the milestones. Well 8 months met us with nothing majorly new, just getting really good at everything she was doing. And then 9 months hit. Man oh man, 9 months has left me in the dust. Milestones on milestone on milestones.

IMG_4969

Stats:

We actually had her 9 month appointment on the real day this time (the 25th) and Whitlee is now weighing 17 lbs 9 oz (46th percentile) and is 27 1/4″ tall (36th percentile). The neonatologist and pediatrician both told us that she probably wouldn’t be fully caught up on development and size until 9 months, and at this appointment they told us that she is officially “caught up”. Finally! Such an exciting moment!

IMG_4971

Eating:

We’re still doing our normal bottles, but is seems like she has reduced back a little from her normal 6 ounces to closer to 4-5. We’re also doing breakfast, lunch, and dinner normally, with snacks occasionally in between. Originally, the pediatrician had said to mix her bottles at a 22 calorie ratio until 9 months, and at her appointment they said it was up to us whether we dropped back to 20 calories or not. We decided to keep with what we’re doing since she is used to that consistency and she tends to be weirded out by any changes. She’s still eating a bottle in the middle of the night about half the time. If for some reason she is awake at 11 or so and I’m still up, I’ll go ahead and top her off for the night and she skips that 2 am wakeup call for another bottle. This is our normal eating schedule:

4:30/5:00 AM – 1st bottle (4 oz)

7:30 AM – Breakfast (usually baby yogurt and cheerios or tiny pancakes)

9:00 AM – 2nd bottle (5-6 oz)

(snacks after nap sometimes, usually puffs, lil crunchies, or fruit)

1:00 PM – 3rd bottle (5-6 oz)

1:30 PM – Lunch (usually a Stage 3 baby food or one of the squeezable pouches)

5:00 PM – 4th bottle (usually a fairly small bottle.. 2-4 oz)

6:00 PM – Dinner (Stage 3 baby food or whatever we’re having. I use this time to let her try new things.)

7:30/8:00 – 5th bottle (5-6 oz)

11:00 PM or 2:00 AM – little bottle (2 oz)

Also, her likes and dislikes for food seem to have become more pronounced. If she acts like she doesn’t like something, I’ll usually try it again in a few days, but after that I let it be. She knows what she likes and will open her mouth up instantly. If it is something new or something she has decided she doesn’t like, she’ll clamp her lips shut and actually shake her head “no”.

IMG_4980

Food Likes:

Cheerios

Strawberry Yogurt – favorite!

Chicken Zuchinni Orzo (Gerber Stage 3)

Pork Roast (shredded bites of what I was eating)

Puffs

Lil Crunchies – Ranch flavor

Broccoli

Hot dogs (cut super small)

Pancakes (plain, no syrup)

Food Dislikes:

Most Fruit

Whole Green Beans

Tuna

Mashed Potatoes

Sleep:

Well, we’re still battling this one. Back when she was swaddled, we did a loose version of “Cry It Out”, and it worked amazingly. Fast forward to the months when her little personality is starting to shine and we have figured out that CIO is just not going to work. There are a handful of kids that it just doesn’t work for and I think Whitlee is one of them. We have figured out that she has her momma’s attitude + her daddy’s willpower, and I’m telling you this girl brings a whole new meaning to persistent. She will literally CIO for hours if I’d let her. H O U R S. On the flip side, we have figured out that she’s much better with our presence, so I can get her to fall asleep in her bed if I will just sit by her bed and let her see me, but I don’t talk to her unless its to calm her down, I don’t touch her unless she’s hysterical, and I actually pretend to sleep myself and usually she’ll go right on to sleep. Last week though we had a rough weekend and she was awake every hour in her bed so I finally just brought her to bed with me, only to spend the entire night with her tossing and turning and kicking and flailing – all while asleep. The next day I noticed her top front teeth were super close to breaking through, so I chalked it up to teething and let her sleep with me. Plus she is learning to walk behind a walking toy and it got the best of her last Sunday and she hit her head pretty hard. There wasn’t any blood, swelling or vomiting, and her eyes were dilating normal, but she cried pretty hard and for a good while before she calmed down so I wasn’t about to make her cry for hours trying to go to sleep on top of it. I recently read The No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley and we’re currently trying a different route on getting her to sleep better at night. Right now she sleeps in her bed for usually an hour or so and then I’ll let her sleep with me. I’ve been trying to get this post up all week but she usually wakes up about the time I sit down to work on it.

She takes two naps consistently now – one morning nap about 9:15 and an afternoon nap about 2:00. Both are usually an hour and a half to two hours.

IMG_4983

Milestones:

She learned how to do so much stuff this month and is on the move now, so she’s into everything.

-Finally crawling really well, and really fast

-Pulling up on everything if she can reach it

-Also pulled up in her crib, so we had to lower the mattress

-Cruises around the furniture

-Will walk behind her walking toy (slowly, but she’s getting the hang of it for sure)

-Eating a lot of “big people” food

-Crossed from the coffee table to the couch

-Can stand holding on to something with only one hand

-Can stand unassisted if her butt is against something (like the wall or the couch or my legs)

-Can stand fully unassisted for about 3 seconds

-Waves “Hi”

-Waves “Bye Bye” (different wave from “Hi”)

-Claps her hands when we say “Yayyyyy”

-Does a hand motion for “Come Here”

-Says full on “Daddy” (not just “Da-Da”… still no Mama yet)

-Shakes her head “No”

-Dances

I’m still expecting those front teeth any day. She has pretty much outgrown all 6 month clothes and is in 6-9 and 9 month outfits.  And her swimsuits and pajamas are 12 months! We’re still in size 3 diapers and probably will be for a long time. I’m even going to exchange a couple of boxes of 4’s and 5’s because I have doubts that we’ll ever grow out of size 3.

IMG_4986

Likes:

Her likes are becoming increasingly unique.

Dislikes:

-Diaper Changes

-Clothing Changes

-Getting her face wiped after eating

Another month down, another month of this sweet little life. She is becoming so smart and so big, it kills me. But also makes me so proud. I can’t wait for the next month because I feel like walking and “mama” are in our near future. Whew…time to babyproof! We love you so very very much, Whitlee Bug!
